Internet Is Fun Somewhere between a joke and an art form sits the single-serving site: one page that does one thing, has no menu, no about page and no plan to become anything else.
They are the opposite of almost everything else online, which is why they are worth collecting.
The rules of the form
A proper single-serving site has all of these:
- One page. No navigation, because there is nowhere to go.
- One idea. Explainable in a sentence, usually in the domain name.
- No account. Nothing to sign up to.
- Finished. It was completed years ago and has not changed since.
That last one is the interesting part โ almost nothing else on the web is ever finished.
The ones that define the format
- Pointer Pointer โ a photo of someone pointing at your cursor. Needs a mouse, so not one for phones.
- Is It Christmas? โ answers one question, accurately, once a year.
- Eel Slap โ a man, an eel, your mouse. That is the whole site.
- Cat Bounce โ physics-enabled cats. Clicking makes it worse.

The quietly useful ones
Not all of them are jokes. Some do one genuinely useful thing and refuse to do anything else โ a single converter, a single timer, a single checker. They load instantly because they contain almost nothing, which is increasingly unusual.
The oddly sincere ones
The Nicest Place on the Internet is strangers hugging the camera. It should be unbearable and it is not. Make Everything OK has one button that makes everything OK.
Both work because they commit completely to one small idea, which is the whole trick.
Why the format survives
Because there is nothing to maintain. No CMS, no dependencies, no roadmap, no growth target. A site that was finished in 2011 is still finished. That is why so much of the pointless web outlasted the funded web.
