Internet Is Fun Wikipedia has a page called Unusual articles. It is maintained by editors, it is enormous, and it exists purely to collect the encyclopediaβs own strangest entries.
That is the single best starting point for a Wikipedia evening, and the one most people have never opened.
The lists that eat an afternoon
- List of unusual deaths β the famous one. Sourced, sober, and completely absorbing. Every entry links to a fuller article, which is where the hours go.
- List of common misconceptions β you will find at least three things you believed this morning.
Both are exactly the format that makes Wikipedia dangerous: a list where every row is a door.
Genuine unsolved mysteries
- The Voynich manuscript β a 15th-century book written in an unknown script that nobody has decoded. Not a hoax theory; an actual open problem.
- Toynbee tiles β hundreds of identical messages embedded in road surfaces across North and South America. Nobody is certain who did it, or why.

Historical events that sound invented
The dancing plague of 1518 is the standard example β dozens of people in Strasbourg danced for days, and historians still argue about why.
The appeal is not that it is unbelievable. It is that it is documented.
How to do this properly
- Open links in new tabs rather than following them. Standard technique, and the direct cause of the tab problem.
- Scroll to the bottom first. See Also and Categories hold the interesting lateral links; the article body is the boring route.
- Read the talk page on anything contested. The argument about the article is often better than the article.
- Follow the citations. On obscure pages this matters β a well-trafficked article is carefully maintained, an obscure one may have sat unexamined for years.
