Internet Is Fun There are two kinds of “creepy website” list. One sends you to jump scares, shock images and sites that want you to download something. The other is about atmosphere β places that feel wrong in a way you cannot immediately explain.
This is the second kind. Everything here is safe to open, nothing jumps out at you, and nothing asks you to install anything.
Empty places
The most reliably unsettling category, and the least gory. Liminal spaces are rooms built for people, photographed with nobody in them β an office corridor at 3am, an empty swimming pool, a shopping centre after closing.
Nothing is happening in any of them. That is the point. The Backrooms grew out of exactly one of these photographs, which tells you how much work the aesthetic does on its own.
Faces that do not exist
This Person Does Not Exist β in the weird websites collection β generates a convincing photograph of somebody who has never lived. Refresh and they are gone forever.
It is not frightening for a second, and then it is. Look at the edges of the image: ears that do not match, a background that dissolves, glasses with one arm. The uncanny part is how long it takes you to notice.
Things that are still running with nobody there
Some of the strangest sites on the web are simply old ones nobody switched off. Pages last updated in 2003, guestbooks with entries from people who may not be alive, counters still ticking.
The nostalgia vault has the cheerful end of this. The unsettling end is what happens when you follow the links outward and they stop resolving.
Unsolved rather than scary
The internet mysteries collection is the reading version of this feeling β thousands of identical test videos nobody could explain, puzzles with no confirmed author, broadcasts that were hijacked and never traced.
These are documented rather than speculative, which makes them more unsettling, not less.
What we deliberately left out
- Anything with jump scares. Cheap, and genuinely unpleasant if you have a heart condition or are wearing headphones at volume.
- Shock and gore sites. Some very well-known “creepy website” lists include these without warning. We are not linking them.
- Anything asking for a download or a webcam. If a site wants either, it is not being creepy, it is being something else.
